2013 // The Exploratorium // The New Tactile Dome
The original Tactile Dome, a permanent installation at the Exploratorium in San Francisco, an experience that takes place in total darkness in which guests walk, climb, crawl, slide and bounce through a riot of textures was opened in 1973 by artist and psychologist Dr. August Copolla. After decades as a beloved Bay Area attraction visited by more than half a million, the relocation of the exploratorium from the palace of fine arts to piers 15/17 in 2013, gave opportunity to improve the visitor experience. Dexter red provided the creative direction, informed by visitor research in the creation of a new experience that respected the original vision of the exhibit, while simultaneously ensuring significant improvements to the visitor experience. Most notably was the inclusion of an new "codex Chamber," which allows disabled visitors to interact with the otherwise inacessable attraction.
