The Concept:
For Dexter Red's second Lecken Playpit instalation at Kreuzwerk, he created his most personal and conceptually complex work to-date as a response to the passing of his mother.
In an effort to reconcile his deep love for her, despite her intense homophobia, influenced by her christian fundamentalist beliefs, he transformed half the club into a neon-lit church which then served as a sexually-charged dancefloor, complete with pews, a sound reactive inverted cross and an altar consiting of a drapped bed and covered in filigree and flames.
To some, this read as sacraligious. The point however, was to create a space in which this religious trauma commonly experienced by the queer community could be collectively processed and exorcised.
DEDICATED TO THE LOVING MEMORY OF SYDNEY IVERSON CLARKE 1966-2025
