For the 2024 edition of Whole United Queer Festival in Gräfenheinchen, Dexter Red created the main social gathering area of the main stage of the world's largest all queer electronic music festival.
With a post-apocalyptic theme, the space utilized clever use of different forms of translucent materials to color and distort the visual presence of visitors to the space.
Given a limited budget, but a central presence of the festival, Dexter opted for a minimalistic approach. The spectacular setting underneath the historic coal excavators on display at Ferropolis and the adjacent light show of the Arena Stage already provided ample interest. His work thus focused more on how to translate such intensity into a space of comfort. As such, much of his decisions focused on ways to filter light in clever and interesting ways into the space.
Most striking was the use of welding curtains as the division between the stage and the space, which captured projected light and shadows and resulted in a continuously changing kaleidoscope of pattern within the space.
